What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction or Spiritual Companioning is the ancient practice of listening into one’s life for the presence and direction of the Spirit. In Spiritual Direction, one might explore questions such as: What is bringing me life right now? Where do I sense an opening or an invitation to love? Where is there a need for healing or greater understanding?

Contrary to what the name might suggest, Spiritual Directors do not give advice or instructions for the spiritual life. Rather, together the pilgrim and the companion try to get a sense of what God is on about in the pilgrim’s life, in their relationships and in the world.

This happens primarily through deep listening. In a Spiritual Direction session, someone might talk about what is happening in their life, especially happenings where movements of heart and soul were noticed. Someone might bring a piece of art, a drawing, a journal entry, a song or poem that has touched them recently. A Spiritual Director will hold the sacred space open with grace-filled listening and heart-centred questions. They might help the pilgrim join the dots or tease out images that have arisen during the session. In short, Spiritual Direction helps one explore the important, lasting aspects of life with intention.

So, what does one “get out” of Spiritual Direction? Well, that depends on what one is seeking and what one brings to the relationship. Some are wanting to discern the path ahead or a significant decision. Some wish to grow spiritually or increase the love and goodness in their lives. Some are looking for healing and peace or to process their grief. Usually the first few session in Spiritual Direction are spent gaining an understanding of where someone is on the journey of life and the possible gifts that await them in Spiritual Direction at this time.

“It is by being awake to God in us that we can increasingly see God in the world around us.”
